Shortly after I joined IVF Cube, I had a fairly young German patient who contacted us wanting treatment with donated eggs. I was working under the supervision of the main coordinator and as part of this, I participated in the initial patient consultations with the doctor (with the consent of all involved).
So I was there when a patient told MUDr. Višnová that she would like IVF therapy with donated eggs. She said she wanted to become a mother at a young age and didn't want to waste any more time. She had 6 failed IUIs and 3 failed ICSIs in Germany and said she did not have the strength for any more disappointments.
MUDr. Višnová replied with understanding but also with the objection that the patient is still young and it would be a shame to give up so soon. She advised the couple to give it one more try with their own eggs. They discussed it at length. It was not easy to convince the patient. MUDr. Višnová concluded the consultation at the end, saying that she did not want to put pressure on the couple, but her personal recommendation was: to try self-stimulation again with us.
Her belief was: if two clinics do the same thing, it is not the same thing. The lab has different specialists, and different equipment and the doctors have different experiences. Perhaps she is right, I thought, and the patient finally decided to have another try with us. So we started the treatment. The puncture went well, and the number of eggs retrieved was good. However, the fertilization result was as expected low (as in Germany) - 1 embryo. I was nervous. The patient was probably nervous too. After the Emglue application, the embryo was transferred and we all waited for the result. I think I was as tense as the patient herself.
After 14 days, a very nice positive HCG came back. I was delighted. But I knew we weren't done yet. But on the other hand, it was an achievement. Because the patient proved to be able to conceive. She´s never been able to accomplish this before. I was hoping that the first trimester would be uneventful.
Well, to make a long story short: yesterday I was visited by a happy young couple in their 20th week of pregnancy who came to the clinic to thank the whole team. They said that what they got from us was priceless, but somehow they still wanted to express their gratitude to us, so they at least brought us this lovingly arranged gift basket and a thank you note on a funny card. The cute stork from the gift basket now sits on my desk and reminds me of the happiness my/our work can bring into other people's lives.
